I personally like the look of really light-colored wood, so often, all I want is a coat of a clear finish. The wood types we chose also are vastly different, ranging from extremely soft (birch) to hard (red oak) with undertones all over the map.

Ive personally used the weathered wood one for this project, and I used the aged wood one on this DIY raised garden bed. Yes, this is one coat of stain. Probably, but youd likely need a combo of stains and Im not sure what that combo would be. These are such a fantastic option for anyone who is nervous about trying out stain and wants to get their feet wet. White Oak has the most neutral undertones. You can get a matte finish polycrylic and that often causes the least amount of change. And were so happy to have you here. You could definitely go with black paint instead! Do you know by chance if you could go over the Jacobean with the simply white to get some contrast?

This is very helpful and well organized, thank you! Similar quality, but less prone to the orangey tones because it has more of a yellow undertone that works with the yellow undertones of white wood. Poplar looked awesome in almost every one except the Golden Pecan. Lastly, we thought it would be beneficial to see all the same wood type with different stains in one picture. We put pine floors in last year and I stained them with a colour called Special Walnut from minwax. Same with hinges.

Im having a pine table made, but I dont love any of those stains. This feels almost black on most of the wood, except for on the red oak where there are definitely more brown tones happening. Birch has pink undertones. On the left half, I used Watcos Lacquer in Matte, and on the top right is the unfinished wood. Instead of the wood grains picking up redness, you can see they all went a very neutral brown. Also agree with comment about poly. Loved seeing all the side by side comparisons. None of the charts here state what kind of wood is being tested. 90% of my customers choose a slightly different color on other materials that isnt flooring. It was extremely helpful. I had such a challenge finding a color that worked with the trim, floor, and lighting in the roomuntil I saw a photo in a paint catalog of a room with a trim color and lighting similar to my bedroom. It looks pretty pink even right after staining, so I dont think the white stain is on Red Oak is what you want. Ill be saving this as reference for all of my future projects :), Love this, thank you! You can see clearly the woods color undertones (yellow, pink, green, neutral, red) but they arent nearly as pronounced. These dont have poly on them. Its definitely worth trying! Darn! it feels almost blue-ish purple with the common pine, and it leans pretty green with the poplar! If this is a potential series, Id love more in depth on layering stains and working with Gel Stains as that is surprisingly easy to do but provides very next level results.

We recent had a fireplace mantle done in Red Oak and were afraid to stain it. This was a great post!! The unconditioned Birch side, again, struggled with accepting the stain, but you can also see the conditioned side of each board is slightly darker. Were a couple of homebodies, working to uncover the home our home wants to be. WOULD LOve to see samples of stains on cedar! This was very helpful in moving forward with our birch project! Nealjust curious.what stain are you going with for an A&C piece? Minwax Dark Walnut. For this particular experiment, I stuck to just wood that can easily be found at your local big box hardware store no specialty wood here.

I think this is due to a yellow undertone in those wood species, becauseon the birch midcentury litter box, you can see a different result. I guess Ill have to look up prices of birch next time I want to forego paint on my project. You may also note that the grain on the red oak really becomes obvious once you add on stain. Without being in the space we cant really say, but one thing I would do is find a piece of red oak that matches the finish of your banister etc. Not staining is also an option (one I opt for quite a bit).

Im looking for a medium toned, neutral-ish stain (I guess). Another way for us to stay in touch! Birch did surprisingly well and the oaks were naturals. Can I use the accelorator Aged Wood (love that look) over one coat of a stain to deepen the dark wood tones? Its interesting because on White Oak, in our experience, the color is much lighter than what is shown in your post. We have rustic birch floors and they are quite soft, they took a beating to upstairs, moderate use. What about bleaching the red oak first then applying the simply white stain? Minwax Simply White. And Red Oak should probably stay away from things that add even more red to it (like Pickled Oak and Golden Pecan). Wow, I didnt realize that about sanding! Both of these woods take stain similarly, so theres not a lot of contrast with this one. :).

It takes a stain well, is durable, inexpensive, and a good cabinet choice. However, going really light has some appeal, too, but I can just envision that dingy gold coming through! It really softened each wood tone and color while not masking any grainlike semi-opaque stains do. I have a bit of a dilemma in that I have white oak floors in my newly renovated kitchen and original red Oak from 1930 on the rest of my main floor. Also was a polyurethane topcoat added which would yellow the stain some? It will really help me to choose the right product for the wood floor of my future house.

Whitewood sometimes got blotchy (again, thats likely to do with the quality of the wood), and poplar looked great but its just not my favorite wood to work with so I tend to favor the others more. The pine to me looked very different from my own experience.

Think of all trim and stair parts as furniture. Im leaning towards a dark stain with no red, to contrast with the white oak floor. Really nice job on this! We let the conditioner penetrate for 15 minutes and then wiped off any excess and removed the tape and got to work applying 6 different stains to all five of our types of wood. However, it does seem that the difference in color is more noticeable with lighter stain once you get into the darker colors, they seem much more similar. I would like to see an experiment in reducing contrastboth grain and defects, such as nail holes and gapsto produce an attractive even dark tone.
