Art is about communicating with the viewer in order to inspire moods, thoughts, or feelings. I am not saying that anyone should paint a subject simply to sell it, but of course, it does happen. Thank you. However, certain art subjects do better in certain locations. I create art both for the pleasure of it, and to sell it. The highest selling types you listed is actually very useful and eye opening. I do traditional Persian paintings (Miniatures). Great article so far (still reading but felt like sharing my feelings). I can see some niches where an artist may choose to "paint for a living" but most will paint because of their passion for their art. I sell less in this way than on eBay, but the difference in achievable price makes the number of sales immaterial. The survey also researched what the best-selling media were. Are smaller paintings more sellable than larger ones? That's a start! After all, the landscape is universal: Everyone understands and appreciates a long view, so it's an easy choice for a buyer. But realistically, if you paint really good nudes, you will have more success concentrating on your strengths than you would painting mediocre landscapes. I haven't considered selling any of my art, but I found the lists fascinating.

Typically, art collectors want pieces that they can show off in their homes. So, whatever you decide to paint, someone out there will be interested in gazing upon it. Although the trend is shifting towards clothed rather than unclothed figures, there is still (and probably always will be) a market for nudes.

Another ancillary benefit of working on a smaller scale is that the paintings will take up less storage space if they don't sell right away.
