Unfortunately, many of them lack basic fraction knowledge, including important vocabulary. So we say one half is equivalent to two fourths.
It was quite the arm workout cutting all those manipualtives out! Then I asked them to make hexagons out of all of their other shapes and figured out the value of each shape. Suddenly I was having to add and subtract fractions (numbers I had never seen written that way before) with unlike denominators and it made absolutely nosense to me.
