In the past 10+ years somehow Makita lost it. It seems like Makita still does just fine for a DIY homeowner, but not so much pro or DIY automotive.

In fairness, I've taken better care of the Makita, save for the recip saw that I cut down hundreds of Buckthorn trees and saplings with, in the mud, flush cut with the ground. At least that's how it sounds from the replies here. You have to know what you are buying.

Milwaukee seems to be ahead of Makita in certain categories like plumbing tools. But I did drink the koolaid and have a small collection of 12v Milwaukee. For mechanical stuff, Milwaukee wins. Apparently my experience with Makita is rare. And they are fairly inexpensive to replace when we need to each truck has 2 sets. I would rank Ryobi a notch lower but still perfectly acceptable. I think so as far as reliability goes. I judge the quality of a tool by how many times I drop it and it keeps working. Ive long felt they sat back on their laurels, with the attitude of we invented the cordless tool market, why should we improve anything?. Seems that way with anything. I believe the warranty is 3 years. Some of my Makita tools after getting some work done. That sucks as I have so many makita tools already.it seems Milwaukee is geared more toward plumbing and makita more toward carpentry IMO but then they both have a couple of tools that cross over both fields, Makita is expensive to replace, and really heavy. Do not advertise or try to compare pricing. Smaller and cheaper than the M18, faster, more powerful, longer lasting than the M12. Makita is at their best when considering woodworking tools.
Within 6 months, I needed to replace one set and the other set needed to be replaced in the next year. I think the only difference is that Milwaukee really stepped up its game, and likely has a better marketing campaign. Makita makes the best non-Festool track saw. The M12 one works the best of any of those expanders I've tried anyway (for the usual 1/2-1").
