However, Vietnams roads are in a constant state of flux: I cant guarantee the condition of any given road. Warning: Be careful wandering off the track up this way as there are plenty of unexploded land mines still lying about. The shop is there on the corner. Honda Win (Chinese rip off version) is the most common at just under USD 300. Home to 7.5 million people, Hanoi still feels like a large village rather than an industrialized city. I suggest visiting Buon Ma Thuot as a thoroughfare destination, saving your time for Kon Tum further north.

Both are looking at buying used 125s whilst there. The road from Bao Lac to Dong Van is one of the best motorbiking roads in the world. Its a difficult decision, but on balance with three weeks youd have a great time stitching together the Ha Giang Loop and the Northeast Loops via the High-Roads between the two.

The Cat Thien to Dalat motorbike route passes through the small villages then head up into the mountains. These days, its a fairly easy & efficient process, A romp through the Central Highlands, the Truong Son Dong Road is a ride to be savoured. It is a detour, but there are far less tucks and the roads are much more scenic. Why? Located 50km north of Nha Trang is the Ninh Hoa Salt Fields. In the crisp dawn light, hundreds of stepped rice paddies, carved into the contours of steep valleys, are illuminated by the autumn sun. You will find the traditional tall houses which are the village community centers. Connecting these three provinces, a handful of incredible mountain roads corkscrew their way through a complex terrain of steep valleys, limestone karsts, and raging rivers. 
However, please keep comments polite and on-topic. Much of this motorbike route travels through Thanh Hoa, a province punctuated by limestone pinnacles, rivers, and rice paddies. It is a great place to visit while motorbiking Vietnams northern end, however, I still think it the more touristy version of Ha Giang. It seems like a great trip. This single landed concrete road is one of the emptiest youll experience in this entire Vietnam motorbikeitinerary. You can get to Cat Ba Island with your motorbike by taking a ferry from Haiphong.
How screwed am I with the weather? Hi Iona, with only 2 weeks Id suggest doing a loop around the north. On these weekends the town is a lively place, but it can be difficult to time your trip accordingly. The food in Hanoi is amazing, and there are a few cool bars to hang out around the old town too. Cat Ba Island is technically located in Lan Ha Bay, slightly north of Halong Bay. I wish I wasnt so road-shy, or Id consider the motorbike route that Josh so nicely presented us.
The ancient town of Hoi An is an idyllic spot in central Vietnam. Do u think my dates are too rushed or will it be enough? For a short period, Id just rent the motorbike instead of buying. Slept in boutique resorts and in hammocks in the jungle. Its the same route, but you might choose which way to ride based on the wet season. The northern district of Sapa has been growing in popularity over the past few years. I receive emails from seasoned motorbikers, whove spent decades riding around the world, informing me that, with the possible exception of northern India, the north of Vietnam is the best riding theyve ever experienced. This outranks the worlds second-largest, Paradise Cave, which is also in the same national park. Thanks for sharing these awesome photographs. Thanh Hoa is overlooked by most travellers in favour of neighbouring Ninh Bnh, which is now extremely touristy. On the way to Cat Thien National Park, youll ride back roads for hours through small villages.

If you are arriving in Vietnam solo and want to find people to join you for the big ride ahead then be sure to stay a couple of nights at the main backpacker street Pham Ngu Lao (seriously awesome hotel deals for under 15 USD per night). Myself and the other half are looking at traveling from Hanoi to Saigon in September 2020, allowing 18 days. Before even starting your adventure you will need to buy yourself a motorbike.
