A lot is known about the Akrotiri archaeological site, but there are a few huge blank spots: namely, what the name of this massive city ever was in the first place. As a result, Akrotiri was stripped of nearly all of its valuables, and no human remains were found in Akrotiri, unlike Pompeii. You may hear only 5% excavated and assume theres nothing interesting to see at Akrotiri but youd be dead wrong. Important factors for this growth, were agriculture, animal husbandry, fishery and shipping.
This helped in the preservation of the remains of the settlement. They were found in large and small walls, doors and windows and they depict nature, religion and everyday life. However, theres no evidence that anyone from Akrotiri survived the exodus, and its likely that they died in a tsunami post-eruption while trying to flee.
Pompeii was founded in 600 BC and destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, but Akrotiri makes it look young. this is the affordable group tour I did and loved. Akrotiri started life as a simple fishing and farming village, growing olives and grains.

Its always been a dream of mine to visit the ancient ruins of Rome and Greece, and especially Pompeii. However, excavations had already started in 1870 by the French geologist F. Fouque. The ruins need to be covered up as the houses are made of mud bricks so would be damaged by water. The Prehistoric site of Akrotiri is easily accessible by car or public transportation and it is a 20-minute drive from Fira. Instead, we both carry the samePacSafe anti-theft backpack.
